Being fat. Lose weight, keep diet. Obesity is becoming increasingly common. Social factors play an important role in this. In our prosperous society we are constantly tempted with tasty, high-calorie food. Apparently, overeating is the most obvious reason why people get too fat. However, there are also medical reasons that may play a role.

Lose weight , weight loss, diet keep … Many people are trying to lose weight because they are too fat or they think they ate too thick. It is said that it is easier to gain weight than to lose weight. Gaining weight is easier because food is associated with socializing and we like food. We usually have no problems eating good and lots, while we quickly find it hard to eat fresh and less. The majority of problems with over weight therefore depend on the ratio of calories consumed in relation to the amount of calories that we need. Because food is found to be delicious, there is soon a too large intake of calories, which makes us fatter. Our body is also built to store excess food as a fat reserve. Even though we only take too many calories from a cookie every day, in the long term we will gain from that little extra calories per day, perhaps a few pounds. In most cases, obesity has no medical cause, but sometimes it does.

Medical causes Overweight

In addition to genetic predisposition, overweight can also have a purely medical cause. What are the medical causes of being overweight?

A slow-acting thyroid causes overweight. The thyroid gland, among other things, controls our metabolism, if this slows down, we burn slower food and fats, with the result: becoming heavier. Because a too slow thyroid gland also makes you tired and slow, the patient naturally moves less. A thyroid gland that works too fast has the opposite effect. The patient feels rushed, loses weight and cannot find rest, sleeps poorly, burns faster and therefore loses weight more quickly.

Certain (very rare) syndromes such as Cushing’s disease and certain tumors in the hypothalamus can cause obesity.
There are many drugs that can cause obesity : Beta-blockers, which are frequently prescribed, prevent the breakdown of fat. Certain anti-depressants, certain anti-epileptic medicines, certain hormone preparations (corticosteroids) and (sometimes also) certain anti-diabetes medicines also result in obesity.
Certain psychiatric illnesses and certain eating disorders can lead to obesity.
Hereditary factors that relate to the metabolism but also to the appetite or the (whether or not congenital) size of the stomach, ensure that obesity occurs much more often in one family than in another.
Pregnancy causes a physiological increase in body weight.
The menopause causes a physiological increase in body weight.

Immobility due to reduced possibilities to move, for example due to diseases that limit movement, will easily lead to obesity.

Being overweight is therefore not always a matter of eating too much and exercising too little. There are exceptions. If you doubt whether there is a physical or medical cause for being overweight, you can have a doctor find out.

Stop smoking and get fatter

It is well known that people easily get heavier when they stop smoking. This can get pretty out of hand. Because smoking is stopped the metabolism will work slower and a feeling of satiety will occur less quickly. As a result, someone gains a few kilos. But it is much more difficult to smoke the psychological addiction that encourages eating. There is usually a constant need to take something as a substitute for smoking. Usually it is food or drink. Someone who quits smoking therefore needs dietary guidance because some ex-smokers gain a lot of weight.

Overweight, Metabolism, Blood Sugar

Fat, metabolism, exercise, hormones, psyche, thyroid and heredity play a role in obesity. In the case of overweight, there is a too large fat supply and a too high body weight in relation to the height of the body. More energy is absorbed through the diet than is consumed (dietary factors). The blood sugar level is also important, we can think of hypoglycamia.

The causes of overweight are therefore diverse. If you want to tackle obesity, it is useful to examine the causes: fat, metabolism, exercise, hormones, psyche, thyroid and heredity .

Fat – Many people suffer from being overweight because more energy is absorbed through food than consumed. In this case, obesity is caused by overly and energy-rich food. Energy is of course necessary to stay alive and to function properly. Our metabolismcontinues day and night. All this body labor requires energy. We obtain this energy through our food. The food is broken down in the digestive tract, absorbed into the blood and transported to all organs and tissues that need the nutrients. In a good situation (keep on weight) you absorb as much energy with the food as you consume. If you eat too little, the body consumes more than is supplied: then you lose weight. This is a negative energy balance. When you eat more for a long time than you consume, you arrive. This is the positive energy balance. When more energy is absorbed than is necessary for the body, the excess is stored in the form of fat. In general, the Dutch eat too fat: too much is consumed in snacks, soft drinks, sweets, and alcohol.

The metabolism does not always work at the same level. The operation depends on various factors. The metabolic rate is partly determined by the thyroid gland. Obesity is often attributed to an under active thyroid gland. In reality, an under active thyroid gland is not common. The metabolism depends on the amount of energy that is ingested: with too much food the metabolism increases and with a diet the metabolism decreases. The latter means that the body could manage with even less nutrition. In practice you see that people lose weight better with a moderate energy restriction (so a normal diet, but less fat) than with a strict energy restriction (‘starving’). Too strict a diet therefore unfortunately results in a situation where people no longer lose weight.

Movement

Movement and losing weight go hand in hand. A positive energy balance is therefore created when more energy is absorbed than is consumed. Energy consumption is largely determined by vital life processes such as metabolism, breathing, and heartbeat. But movement also plays a role. Lack of movement contributes to the development of overweight.

 

Hormones./ Blood sugar levels

Hormones are substances that are made in the body itself and that play an important role in metabolism. Disorders in hormone management can lead to obesity. Excessive too much insulin is a common disorder. Insulin is a hormone that is made in the pancreas. Insulin is important in maintaining good blood sugar levels . With too much insulin, the blood sugar level drops, if the insulin is insufficient, the blood sugar level increases. With too much insulin there is a feeling of hunger, it is also easier for fat to be stored in the body and for fat loss to be complicated. A vicious circle then arises: you want sweets, you eat more, there is a larger fat supply. This disorder has hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar). The hormones in the adrenal glands play a role in the storage of fat. Fat storage increases with overproduction of these hormones. The pill can enhance the feeling of hunger. The feeling of hunger often increases before menstruation. This is due to the increased production of estrogen.

Heredity

A well-known statement is: “every pound goes through the mouth.” That is also true, but obesity and heredity is a notorious combination, when obesity develops. Also the places in the body where a fat ear is placed are determined by hereditary factors.

Psychological

Eating is also experienced as a consolation . Food can be used to eliminate negative emotions such as sadness, loneliness, lack of appreciation, depressive feelings. And do not eliminate boredom. These psychological factors lead to obesity.
